(gita 9/3) rishi shankh aur likhit astey vrat men purn shraddha rakhte the. ek bar rishi likhit apne agraj rishi shankh ke ashram men gae to vahan unhen n shankh mile aur n hi unki patni. likhit kshudhapirit the. is karan unhonne bhrata ke upavan se ek fal tor liya aur use khane lage. usi samay rishi shankh a gae aur unhonne likhit ko fal khate hue dekh liya. shankh ne anuj likhit ko prempurvak apne samip bulaya aur unse kaha- ‘bhrata likhit! tum mere ashram men ae aur tumne mere upavan ko apna upavan samajhakar usse fal tor kar khaya. isse mera man prasann to hua, kintu jis astey dharm ka vrat hamne le rakha hai, uske palan karne se tum vimukh hue ho, atah tum dand ke bhagi ho.’ rishi likhit ne apne agraj shankh se kaha- ‘bhaiya! ap jo chahen dand de sakte hain, main use saharsh svikar karne ko taiyar hun.’ rishi shankh bole- ’main dand vidhata nahin hun. dand dene ka adhikar to yahan ke raja ko hai, atah unke pas jao aur dand prapt kar chair karm ke apradh se mukt ho jao.’ rishi likhit raja ke pas gae aur unhonne raja ko apni stey katha kah sunai. raja ne kaha- ‘jis prakar raja ko dand dene ka adhikar hai, usi prakar kshama karne ka bhi use adhikar hai.’ likhit ne unhen age bolne se rok diya aur kaha- ‘ap dand vidhan ka palan karen. stey ka jo bhi dand brahmanon ne nishchit kar diya hai, use ap kriyanvit karen.’ rishi likhit ke kathan ko sunakar raja ne unke kalai tak donon hath katva die. likhit hath katvakar bare bhai shankh ke pas laut ae aur unse prasann hokar bole- ‘bhaiya! main raja se dand lekar aya hun. dekho, mainne apki anupasthiti men apke upavan se ek fal torakar jo chori ki thi, uske dandasvarup raja ne mer donon hath katva die. ab to ap prasann hain n.’ shankh ne uttar diya- ‘ab main prasann hun kyonki tum stey namak apakarm se mukt ho gae ho. ao, punyaslila nadi men snan kar sandhya vandan karen.’ likhit ne bhai shankh ke sath nadi men snan kiya. tarpan karne ke lie jaise hi likhit ke donon hath jal se uthe, vaise hi ve hath purvavat ho gae. rishi shankh ka astey vrat kabhi khan.i dat nahin hua tha. unki manovancha thi ki bhai likhit ke donon hath purn ho jaen. hastapurnata dekhakar likhit ne kaha- ‘bhaiya! yahi karna tha to apne mujhe raja ke pas kyon bheja ?’ shankh ne uttar diya- ‘apradh ka dand to raja hi de sakta hai, kintu dharm vrat ka palan karne vale samarth brahman ko use kshama karne ka bhi adhikar hai. atah mainne tumhen kshama kar diya, jisse tumhare hath purn ho gae. ab tum astey vrat ka palan karte hue pratidin ganga men snan karna, isse tum svarg lok men pratishthit ho sakoge.
