Gana Porutham

Gana Porutham is also one of the components of Ashtakoota. So, it will not be dealt here. Readers and the students are advised to study the preceding chapter entitled 'Gana Koota'.

Mahendra Porutham

Marriage is considered sacred anywhere and everywhere. It is a solemn union of a boy and a girl, a togetherness of the two through the thick and thin of life. This being the cornerstone of belief in India particularly, the people here look into the future of a marriage of the two who present a marriage alliance. The horoscopes of the prospective couple is matched to find out what will be their future status in marriage and if not found compatible, the marriage is called off. If there is compatibility of mental attitudes and temperaments of the couple, it gives the assurance that the marriage will be a happy one.

Mahendra Porutham is considered for the longevity, wealth and progeny. According to this, the family will have children and prosperity if there is matching of Mahendra Porutham in the horoscopes of the boy and the girl. Besides this, the husband will have the capability of protecting his wife and their children from evil of the world and provide for them in kind and in finances. It is believed that Mahendra Porutham is so important in match making that if it matches, it nullifies the doshas of Dina Porutham and Rashiyadhipati Porutham.

If the boy's Janma Nakshatra is 4th, 7th, 10th, 13th, 16th, 19th, 22nd and 25th from that of the girl's Janma Nakshatra, it is considered very good. In the situation otherwise,

match is not compatible at all. For example, if the boy's Janma Nakshatra is 15th from that of the girl, it can be said that the match is not compatible and hence the marriage is not permissible in this condition.

Stree Deergha Porutham

Marriage is considered a sacred union. It is a bond never to be broken and so divorce is never an option once a man and woman are bound through wedlock. For the Indians, marriage is a serious matter, a lifelong union. Therefore, they desire to make it an auspicious life for the boy and the girl where there is harmony, peace, prosperity and unending love.

The Janma Nakshatra of both the boy and the girl is taken into consideration to match Stree Deergha Porutham. If the Janma Nakshatra of the boy is beyond 9th when counted from the Janma Nakshatra of the girl, it is said to be a good match and bestows prosperity and all-round happiness. When counted from the girl's Janma Nakshatra if the boy's Nakshatra is :

  • ƒWithin 9, it is considered a bad match, however 2nd, 4th, 6th, 8th and 9th are permissible for marriage.
  • ƒBetween 10 and 19 - Good.
  • ƒBetween 20 and 27 - Very Good.

This is extremely important because the husband's long life ensures a happy relationship with his wife which in turn leads to a happy long life for both. Matching of Rajju Porutham indicates good mangalya bala by enhancing considerably the longevity of the husband. Even when all the other Koota agreements are excellent, if Rajju Porutham is not matching properly, marriage is prohibited. So much of importance

Horoscope Matching

Today “Horoscope matching” has become the indispensable part of Hindu marriage. But it has not been mentioned in any old Jataka scripture of Astrology. However, it has been described in the Muhurta scriptures of the same. In Ramayan, marriage of Rama, Bharata, Lakshmana and Shatrughna has been described elaborately. But, in this great epic also Horoscope matching has not been mentioned. Likewise, in Mahabharata, too, it has not been cited. Therefore, it can be said that Horoscope matching in Astrology was not in practice a few centuries ago. But, the community accepted and made it an indispensable part keeping its usefulness in view.
