Gana Koota 9.

There are three different ganas and each individual belong to anyone particular gana. In matchmaking, the gana of the boy should be superior to that of the girl. If it is so then full six points are allotted. However if the boy belongs to Dev gana and the girl belongs to the Rakshasa gana then 0 point is given.

Gana Koota is another important component of Ashtakoota milaan. This aspect has an important bearing on the compatibility of temperament and character of the couple concerned. Its purpose is to compare the general traits of one's behaviour which is determined by an individual's nature. Our texts mention about three different types of nature or gunas i.e. Satoguna, Tamoguna and Rajoguna. Satoguna represents purity of thought and goodness, Rajoguna represents luxurious pursuits, merry making and pomp & show while Tamoguna represents harshness, rudeness and ignorance. Based on these three qualities human beings have been classified into three categories according to their inherent nature. The three distinct Ganas representing different virtues of the human being are Deva, Manushya and Rakshasa. This classification is based on the Janma Nakshatra of an individual. All the Nakshatras have been divided into these three Ganas and an individual born in a particular Nakshatra is assigned one of these existing ganas. The following table indicates the Gana as per the Janma Nakshatra.

Horoscope Matching

Today “Horoscope matching” has become the indispensable part of Hindu marriage. But it has not been mentioned in any old Jataka scripture of Astrology. However, it has been described in the Muhurta scriptures of the same. In Ramayan, marriage of Rama, Bharata, Lakshmana and Shatrughna has been described elaborately. But, in this great epic also Horoscope matching has not been mentioned. Likewise, in Mahabharata, too, it has not been cited. Therefore, it can be said that Horoscope matching in Astrology was not in practice a few centuries ago. But, the community accepted and made it an indispensable part keeping its usefulness in view.
