Vashya Koota 5.

Vashya means to be in one's control. Ours is a male dominated society where it is supposed that the boy will dominate over the girl as husband throughout the life. So in match making it is determined first to see as to which category boy and girl belong. If the boy is superior and have naturally the controlling power then full two points are given otherwise not.

Vashya literally means to be in control. Here the Rashis of girl and boy are compared to see which Rashis are controllable by whom to determine the element of control or domination between the two prospective partners. The Rashis have been divided into 5 categories in the following manner:

  1. 1.Quadruped (Animal) : Pet animal that think of itself.
  2. 2.Biped (Human being) : Think for the society and others also.
  3. 3.Aquatic (Jalchar) : Remains always restless.
  4. 4.Wild (Vanachar) : Likes to remain alone & if necessary, becomes ferocious also.
  5. 5.Insect (Keeta) : Keeps its sentiments concealed and stings whenever necessary.

In Sanskrit language, Vashyam means, one's control or domination over the other. This is seen in matching of horoscopes for marriage. The purpose of checking 'Vashya' in marriage is to avoid any chance of opposition or confrontation between the husband and wife. If the Janma Rashi (Moon Rashi) of the girl is under control of the Janma Rashi (Moon Rashi) of the boy, there will be good adjustment between the husband and wife and vice-versa as lack of mutual understanding may lead to frequent quarrels between the two.

Rashi and Vashya Categories

The twelve Rashis of the zodiac fall into the following categories :

Quadruped (Animal)

Aries, Taurus, 2nd half of Sagittarius and the first half of Capricorn are considered to be quadruped Rashis. Among these Rashis, Leo is considered to be a vanachar.

Horoscope Matching

Today “Horoscope matching” has become the indispensable part of Hindu marriage. But it has not been mentioned in any old Jataka scripture of Astrology. However, it has been described in the Muhurta scriptures of the same. In Ramayan, marriage of Rama, Bharata, Lakshmana and Shatrughna has been described elaborately. But, in this great epic also Horoscope matching has not been mentioned. Likewise, in Mahabharata, too, it has not been cited. Therefore, it can be said that Horoscope matching in Astrology was not in practice a few centuries ago. But, the community accepted and made it an indispensable part keeping its usefulness in view.
