degree away from another planet, they are said to be in aspect.

Conjunction : When two planets are on the same longitude.

Opposition : When distance between any two planets is 180°.

Trine :When distance between any two planets is 120°

Square :When distance between any two planets is 90°

Sextile : When distance between any two planets is 60°

Semi Sextile : When distance between any two planets is 30°

The effect of an aspect is felt even if the planet is not at the exact distance as stated above. It is our common experience that we can judge the intensity of a glowing hot body by bringing our hands near to the body. Similarly the distance between the two planets from where they start feeling effect of other planet is called orb of the aspect.

The orb of the aspect for :

Conjunction is 8°

Square is 8°

Malefic aspect

Sextile is 7°

Trine is 8°

Benefic aspect

The influence of an aspect say trine, starts when the planets are 112° away from each other, gradually increasing (applying) and it will be maximum at 120°, the influence of the aspect start decreasing (separating) till the planets are 128° away from each other and at 128° it will be nil. The orbs are different according to Hindu astrology. According to Neelkanth' "Prashna Tantra" the following are the orbs of different planets:

We should take into consideration the nature of the aspect as well as the nature of the planet involved in aspect. (See for the chart 1)

Sun and Moon, Moon and Mars are in sextile aspect.

Sun and Mars, Moon and Saturn, Moon and Venus are in trine aspect

Venus and Mars, Saturn and Mars are in opposition

Mars and Mercury, Mercury and Saturn, Mercury and Venus, Sun and Jupiter are in square aspect.

Jupiter and Venus, Jupiter and Saturn are in semi sextile aspect.

Saturn and Venus are in conjunction.

To Calculate the orbs of influence of two planets, we add the orbs of two planets and divide by 2 to get the average orb of influence. Let Sun be at 0/10° and Mars 4/20° longitude. The Sun and Mars are having trine aspect but are 10° apart. Now let us see whether Sun and Mars are within influence. We add the orb of Sun 15° and Mars 8° equal to 23° divided by 2. The average orbs is 12.5° so the Sun and Mars are within influence. If the planets are not within influence of average orb, there is no real aspect. It is called plastic influence, not exact. If planets are nearer to each other there will be more influence between them.
